TotalEnergies has developed a strong expertise in oil and biofuels, natural gas and electricity trading. Trading entities are based in Geneva, Paris, Houston and Singapore.

TotalEnergies installed its European trading hub across in Geneva, which now bring together very large teams around trading activities: TotalEnergies Trading & Shipping (T&S) and TotalEnergies Gas and Power (TGP).

TotalEnergies Gas and Power (TGP) is the trading arm of TotalEnergies in the field of low carbon energies. As such, it operates in fast-evolving market dynamics influenced by internal and external factors that require constant adaptation and evolution.
The Trading division in Geneva is responsible for optimising the purchase & sales portfolios of gas, electricity, CO2 emissions, dry bulk, and LNG in all recognised markets worldwide, in compliance with the Company trading guidelines.
In such context, TGP helps to ensure growth and profitability to a key segment of the business in order to reach the objective of Carbon Neutrality by 2050.

In this context, we are looking to hire an experienced legal professional to become our Legal /Senior Legal Counsel – GPE and TEM Regulatory focus. You will join our Legal team based in Geneva, which provides legal support to the GPE and TEM division at TotalEnergies Gas & Power Limited Geneva Branch (TGP), the main trading organisation for gas (including LNG), power, renewables, dry bulk products and financial derivatives of the TotalEnergies group of companies.

What you will do
As Legal Counsel,you will be providing legal support to TotalEnergies Gas & Power Limited (TEGP),and when needed to Trading and Shipping (TS).
You will be reporting to the Lead Counsel GPE and TEM and will be closely working with traders, originators, operators, credit, middle, back office, Compliance, Operational Compliance and IT functions.
You will take part of third party negotiation teams (legal/commercial/operations etc.) on variety of transactions and liaises with administrative, regulatory authorities and business associations on regulatory subjects.

Your missions would typically include the following:
Provide legal services and advice on the legal and regulatory issues relating primarily to gas, power & emissions (including related certificates, ancillary services and market-based regulatory mechanisms), physical and derivatives trading, origination in Europe and related corporate activities (governance, procurement);
From time to time may be required to provide legal assistance in other areas of the business: LNG, dry bulk trading, IT, or other key business areas of the Company as they evolve;
Analyse legal and regulatory framework relating to the gas, power, emissions, and other environmental certificates business, contribute to structuring transactions and drafting all required agreements and contractual documentation ;
From time to time manage regulatory processes and prepare, draft and issue regulatory and reporting documentation as required in relation to the above stated activities
More generally:
Laws and regulations - monitor, analyse and advise on the applicable laws and regulations, including technical energy regulatory documentation and market rules, for the business, and changes to those laws, in relevant jurisdictions, including Switzerland, the European Union (and Member States) and the UK;
Advise on regulatory compliance particularly for energy regulations and financial trading throughout Europe;
Understand the gas and power, and renewable energy business and the commercial and technical issues which may affect the legal services being provided;
Negotiation - assist internal clients in commercial and contractual negotiations with third parties;
Risk – advise on legal risks and minimise the impact of legal risks for the business;
Disputes – assist in the management of legal disputes for the Company and advise on the risks and outcomes (litigation, arbitration, mediation);
When necessary attend legal and industry working groups to assess industry changes;
Assist in the instruction of external counsel and actively monitor and minimise external legal costs.

Context and environment
You will evolve in an international, fast-paced and dynamic trading environment with time-sensitive, business critical activities requiring responsiveness, proactivity, strong planning and organisational skills and attention to details. The decisions must be quick and require excellent mastery of legal topics as the rapidly changing legal environment could have significant financial impacts. You will need to work both as a team player and autonomously, within the Legal Department and with the business.

Candidate profile
You have a minimum of 3 to 5-year post-qualification experience as a licensed solicitor or an equivalent European qualification, preferably in England and Wales. Legal knowledge of another European jurisdiction is an advantage.
You should be able to provide a strong knowledge of EU and Member States’ energy legal and regulatory frameworks (e.g. wholesale markets, renewable production, system operators’ ancillary services) and market-based regulatory mechanisms.
A previous experience within energy trading agreements is a considerable advantage.
You must be proficient in English legal drafting skills (and fluently speak, read and write in English). Knowledge of another European jurisdiction, as well as mastering French and/or another major European language would also be an advantage.
You thrive working both as a team player and autonomously and demonstrated effective communication skills at all levels of the organization. You also developed solid negotiation skills, solution-oriented attitude, collaborative mind-set and proactivity.
