Description

The Myspace Laboratory is seeking a PhD research assistant to join the Peripersonal Space-Time project starting June 1st, with an employment rate between 80% and 100%.

Contexte

The Lausanne University Hospital CHUV is one in five university hospitals in Switzerland. Academically, it is linked to the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and it holds close ties to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).

This position is filled in the context of a new research project entitled; “Neural mechanisms for mapping body-environment interactions in space and time: Peripersonal Space-Time (PPST) indexes Self-Consciousness “here and now””, coordinated by the MySpace Lab at the CHUV (led by ), in collaboration with the Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience (LNCO) led by Prof. Olaf Blanke at the EPFL, and the group led by Milan Scheidegger at the University of Zurich. The project is funded by a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

has a highly recognized background in cognitive neuroscience and a strong network to the neuroscience-research community in Europe and in the US. We provide a collaborative and dynamic environment, access to state-of-the art experimental equipment and a rare unique opportunity to work at the interface between fundamental and clinical research. Our laboratories are situated at the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the CHUV in Lausanne and at the recently opened NeuroRehab Center at the Lavigny hospital, and interact strongly with the EPFL, the Schools of Applied Sciences and neurotechnologically oriented industry partners. This represents an ideal environment for conducting both basic and translational research. The multidisciplinary nature of the project will require frequent exchanges with the project partners.

Mission

  • Investigate whether space and time are jointly represented in the brain
  • Study interactions with the immediate environment around the body, known as peripersonal space (PPS)
  • Examine the neural network underlying PPS, which integrates tactile stimuli on the body with external sensory inputs (visual, auditory, etc.)
  • Move beyond a purely spatial perspective of PPS by identifying temporal factors influencing multisensory integration
  • Apply psychophysical methods, EEG, fMRI, and computational modeling to address these questions
  • Characterize a spatio-temporal Peripersonal Space-Time (PPST) field
  • Investigate how PPST varies across different states of consciousness, as modulated by meditation and psychedelics.

Profil

  • Curious and open-minded student motivated to work on an interdisciplinary research project
  • Responsible for conducting psychophysical experiments, neuroimaging (EEG) experiments, and/or computational modeling
  • Member of the MySpace Lab, within a multidisciplinary team including senior postdoctoral researchers and VR developers with strong field expertise
  • Previous experience in conducting experiments with human participants and in experimental data analysis
  • Versatile profile with a strong interest in both quantitative methods and experimental design
  • Holds (or will hold) at least a Master’s degree in neuroscience, experimental psychology, biomedical engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, biology, or a related field
  • Previous experience with EEG techniques and neural network modeling considered an asset
  • Excellent command of English (C1 level) required
  • The student will receive a PhD degree in neuroscience from the which provides high level training in both theoretical and experimental aspects of neuroscience.
