Advanced Oncotherapy is an innovative technology business focused on delivering a proton-based radiotherapy system using technology originally developed and tested at the world- renowned CERN facility in Switzerland.
Proton beam therapy is likely to play a crucial role in the affordable treatment of cancer in the future. Advanced Oncotherapy’s system is based on a linear accelerator (‘LIGHT’) technology that is superior to traditional cyclotron/synchrotron accelerators and significantly less expensive to implement than its competitors. The company acquired the technology through the acquisition of A.D.A.M. SA, a CERN spin-off company, in 2013.
Commercial momentum is now building, with an order book reaching several hundred million dollars. In the UK the company has formed a JV with Circle, a leading UK healthcare company, to create the UK’s first proton therapy centre at a prestigious Harley Street site which is currently being developed.
The global technology company, Thales, is the company’s global manufacturing partner for the next stage, managing production from their facility in Thonon, France and supporting the company in the move to full commercial roll-out and fully industrialised machine series production.
Advanced Oncotherapy’s head office is in London, with R&D/ADAM located in Meyrin, Switzerland, and a manufacturing plant, clinical research and clinician training facility in Syracuse, USA.

The Role
The Senior Vice President of Medical Physics is responsible for the product’s medical physics vision and needs. The product needs include tasks in support of product development and evolution, product use by the client, testing and validation, installation and others. Such tasks include documentation, procedures, experiments, interactions with other company units and so on. The SVP is responsible for structuring and operating a team consistent with the above needs. The SVP supports marketing and competitive research efforts to ensure that product is state-of-art and recognized as a first-class and first-choice product. The SVP is the representative (or the SVP’s designee) to other company units for medical physics. The current state of the product development requires a detail-oriented, hands-on approach and direct involvement of the SVP in the day-to-day execution of tasks. It is recognized that (1) medical physics serves many technical aspects of the product and (2) that medical physics has a specific business role especially in terms of enabling the successful and safe use of the product by the client.
This role will manage the medical physicists (or equivalent) involved in product requirements, clinical commissioning and validation processes and client installation support. They will also coordinate medical physics activities with senior medical physics consultants and supervise product installation efforts vis-à-vis medical physics requirements on site.

Tasks and responsibilities
Product Development
Engages in medical device development tasks (where a task is a set of activities such as requirement definition))
Supports product definition and ensure optimal clinical use of product
Defines medical physics services and associated tasks to ensure their availability in the product development
Definition of pre-clinical commissioning and validation of product.

Product Deployment
Ensures installed systems are safe and clinically useable by the customers.
Ensures optimal customer acceptance and “first patient” processes

Development of Medical Physics Services:
Develops new business opportunities, afforded by the L-PTF “all-in-one” scope, for value added medical physics services including commissioning, quality assurance, and clinical physics opportunities
Communicates effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative technical solutions and strategies
Participates in and nurture broad networks of alliances with others to exchange knowledge and change in support of change initiatives boosting productivity and safety
Works with sub-vendors to ensure optimal deployment of sub-vendor system in the L-PTF

Attracts and retains staff
Sets business goals and budgets, monitors work, and evaluates results to ensure that departmental and organizational objectives and product requirements are met and are in line with the needs and mission of the organization
Formulates long-term objectives and standards of performance for the department
Translates the long-term objectives into short and near-term objectives with accountability
Motivates and provides technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on project leadership, recognizing the role as that of both manager and support resource / mentor.

Provides corporate Leadership
Provides up-to-date and mission-critical information to CEO and board concerning the product and projects
Ensures highly productive relationships and partnerships for the benefit of the organization
Sets the company’s strategic direction together with key members of the senior leadership team
Supports company sales and marketing

Qualifications and experience
PhD in Medical Physics or other field of Physics
Board certified in USA or in Europe
12-year experience in medical physics within an active clinical, hospital-based, operation
6-year experience in proton radiotherapy
6-year in a leadership position

Skills and aptitudes
Excellent communication skills demonstrable in writing and oral presentation and in professional interactions with colleagues
In-depth technical and operational knowledge of radiotherapy clinical (i.e. treatment planning) and support (i.e. dosimetry equipment) systems
Comprehensive knowledge of radiotherapy regulations and standards (such as they apply to the practice of radiotherapy systems)
Leadership and team building skills
Multi-tasking of various projects and tasks
In depth knowledge and hands-on experience in experimental methods, design and practice

Experience in medical device development
Experience in regulatory documentation processes
Engineering knowledge of and experience at system and component level with medical particle therapy accelerators, intensity modulated scanning systems and treatment positioning and imaging systems.
Electrical engineering working knowledge
