MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Encouraging and supporting students to enjoy and make the most of the learning opportunities offered by the school and, specifically, to teach English language and literature courses to High School students. The role includes the possibility of teaching IGCSE and IB English classes, English language acquisition-level courses to students whose first language is not English and of becoming a homeroom advisor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The English teacher will:

  • Promote the school-s mission and vision by assisting students, both day and boarding, to discover and develop individual strengths, make powerful, life-long global connections, and be their best selves.
  • Contribute to the creation of a caring and inclusive learning environment in which students can flourish, ensuring that each student-s health and well-being are given the necessary priority.
  • Embody and promote Collège du Léman-s RISE values of Respect, Internationalism, Spirit, and Excellence
  • Use and develop the existing resources to teach all or some of the following: High School, IGCSE, and IB English classes and EAL classes.
  • Supervise Extended Essays within the IBDP programme, if required.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Qualification

You should possess a relevant university degree and a teaching qualification, alongside a specialised certification in English as an Additional Language (EAL). Furthermore, having a Master's degree in a pertinent area of pedagogy would be beneficial.

Experience

You should have experience teaching English Language and Literature in a High School setting, particularly to students whose first language may not be English. It's essential to have experience teaching EAL students and addressing the needs of students with diagnosed learning differences in the classroom. Desirable experiences include teaching IGCSE Second Language English, IB Language B, and IELTS, as well as working as a homeroom advisor and teaching in an international school setting.

Prior Skills and Knowledge

As a native English speaker, you should be proficient in using educational technology to enhance learning. Demonstrating a good rapport with students, being firm yet empathetic and fair, and showcasing strong organisational skills, as evidenced by meeting the requirements of external examination boards, are crucial. Additionally, possessing good verbal and written communication skills is essential, while having a working knowledge of French is desirable.

Additional Skills

You should excel at working collaboratively as part of a team and be adept at meeting tight deadlines. You must have a solid understanding and experience with Assessment for Learning (AfL) techniques, effective classroom management strategies, and differentiation strategies to accommodate diverse student needs.

It is important that the post holder is always aware of Child Protection guidelines and observes a professional distance from students whilst still developing effective working and caring relationships. You understand and embrace the importance of diversity and inclusion and stand against discrimination in any form. Background investigations and reference checks for the past ten years will be conducted during the selection process.
