Applied Physicist/Engineer in the Engineering Department (EN), Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI), Fluka Development and Applications (FDA) Section.

You will join:
The Engineering (EN) Department that provides engineering competencies, infrastructure systems and technical coordination for the world's largest particle accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.
The Sources, Targets and Interactions (STI) Group which has the mandate to study the interactions of beam with matter, applying its know-how to particle generation and particle interception. The group is also responsible for developing and maintaining the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and for providing formal training and support to its users in the accelerator community and to the experiments worldwide. The group hosts members of the n_TOF and UA9 collaborations.
The Fluka Development and Applications (FDA) Section is in charge of the FLUKA code development, maintenance and support. The section performs beam-machine interaction studies for all CERN accelerators, and FLUKA calculations for different applications, including conceptual design of beam intercepting devices, new target areas, medical applications, etc.

As Physicist/Engineer in the Fluka Development and Applications Section, you will initially:
Contribute to the development of new technical solutions for the beam slow extraction from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), improving the related loss management;
Take part in the studies for the deployment of new protection devices and a new collimation system in the SPS;
Prepare the use of new technologies, in particular bent crystals, for loss minimization in beam extraction, especially in view of future experiments requiring high intensity in the North Area.

In the longer term you will:
Specialize in the analysis of the various kinds of losses affecting the SPS operation, address their consequences and help in improving their management and monitoring;
Develop expertise in the physics and technology aspects implied by beam manipulation with bent crystals;
Contribute to beam-machine interaction studies concerning other CERN accelerators and facilities to support their design, operation and upgrade;
Maintain and develop the machine models and the related tools used to describe secondary particle production and transport and to assess energy deposition.

Qualification required
Master's Degree or Ph.D in the field of particle/nuclear physics, accelerator physics or nuclear engineering, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies
The experience required for this post is:
Solid knowledge of beam-matter interaction and its effects;
Extensive experience in Monte Carlo simulation of particle showers in complex geometries and in calculation of machine protection relevant quantities;
Knowledge of the principles of hadron beam manipulation with bent crystals;
Knowledge of beam dynamics and of the principles of accelerator physics;
Experience in the study of high energy beam extraction and/or collimation.

Would be considered a plus:
Experience in computer programming and tools development, knowledge of any of Fortran, C, C++ and Python.

The technical competencies required for this post are:
Beam-machine interaction simulation;
Simulation of radiation environments;
Knowledge of accelerator physics theory;
Application of beam loss detectors;
Programming/software development.

The language competencies required are:
Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts;
Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.

Note on Employment Conditions
We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry. Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:
Work in radiation areas;
Interventions in underground installations;
A valid driving licence;
Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization;
Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization;
Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
